Insufficient participation by the India’s population in the financial sector has long been a matter of concern for generations of Indian policymakers. In the past several approaches to rectify this have been tried including the nationalization of some major commercial banks. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Jana Dhana Yojana and other policy initiatives have taken a bold step in the direction of ensuring greater financial inclusion.

In this 2016 K R Narayanan Oration, Minister Jaitley will review the potential of these policy measures to stimulate financial inclusion and, hence, reduce poverty and create job opportunities through people’s enhanced participation.
