In 1997 I completed a biography of Soe Hok-gie, a young Indonesian political activist and intellectual of the 1960s. In 2004 the Indonesian film company Miles Films released the movie ‘GieŸ? based on the life of SHG. My talk will draw some links between these two events and hopefully provide a few insights into an ‘industry’ that may be foreign territory for many people.
