Are people more concerned about inequality when they have accurate information about the scale of inequality in their country? This seminar will explore this issue using results from randomised controlled trials for a sample of over 50,000 online survey participants in 12 countries, including Australia. The results show that people’s concern about inequality is elastic to information in all countries, whereas their preference for redistribution is relatively inelastic. In addition, most people who found out they are richer than they thought became more concerned about inequality. This is in contrast to existing economic theories.
