The remarkable growth of Bangladesh’s apparel industry within the global apparel value chain is an interesting case because it grew from virtually zero export capacity to the second largest apparel exporter in the world, disproving speculations that it would lose its market share. The findings suggest that, contrary to the gloomy predictions which were based on the erroneous treatment of apparel as homogenous products, the abolition of MFA helped Bangladesh to carve out a niche in the high-volume low-end of the apparel value chain based on ample availability of labour.
