Bangladesh is an early adopter of pre-paid electricity metering in South Asia through state-owned electricity distribution companies across different cities. Using unique customer-level monthly electricity consumption data and a difference-in-difference design, this paper estimates the impacts of pre-paid metering on electricity consumption in Dhaka city. Customers reduce their monthly electricity consumption by 47 kWh or 24 percent when switching from post-paid to pre-paid metering, and pre-paid metering has a larger effect on consumption for the customers in the lower tariff life-line group compared to the upper tariff-line samples.
